Different Methods of Water Softening:

  • Ion Exchange Water Softening: The most common and efficient method of water softening is an ion exchange method. It involves the exchange of minerals (Ca & Mg) through sodium ions.

The sodium ions come from brine solution which performs a rigorous process for water softening.

 

  • Distillation Method:  The water is heated inside a container until evaporation starts. The evaporated water is fed through a cooling tube to store in a tank. Vapors condense and transform into a liquid state. The water is soft pure water with no impurities (minerals).

This method is cheap and can be executed easily at home. However the quantity of water is very low, that is good for drinking purpose.

  • Reverse Osmosis (RO): Reverse Osmosis is a process to push water through extremely fine filters under pressure of 35 psi for filtering impurities and attain water pH balance. Hard water containing minerals, chemicals or organic dissolved solids all gets removed in this water softening process. The impurities flow out through drainage pipe and soft water is stored in the water coolers.

  • Chelation (Water Conditioning):  Chelation means conditioning water hardening ions and chemicals that contribute to lime scaling. It is an illustrious process for descaling limescale making water fitting for household use.

This process is environmentally friendly as no water or electricity wastage is there. No sodium and negligible maintenance make it affordable and handy.
